One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates – Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray]

One Piece: The Princess and the Pirates - Adventures in Alabasta Movie #8 [Blu-ray]

Amazon.com

A desert may seem like an unlikely place for pirates, but Luffy and his Straw Hat crew fight for Princess Vivi in the eighth One Piece movie, subtitled “The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta.” Crocodile and his Baroque Works gang foment a civil war in Alabasta, so they can control the country after most of its warriors have been killed. Crocodile also hopes to gain control of the Pluton, an ultimate weapon that may or may not exist. But Luffy and the Straw Hats charge to Vivi’s rescue. Having eaten the Suna Suna or Sand Fruit, Crocodile can turn any part of his body into sand–a trick that may remind viewers of Gaara in Naruto. The climactic battle between the two pirate leaders pits Crocodile’s sand transformations against Luffy’s Gum Gum limbs and wits. Despite its title, One Piece: Movie 8 consists of recut footage from the “Alabasta” story arc of the TV series with some bits of additional animation. The repurposed footage doesn’t always fit together: the film opens in the middle of an adventure and some important story elements get lost in the shuffle, including how Luffy is saved from the poisoned wound Crocodile inflicts. These inconsistencies probably won’t bother One Piece fans. (Rated PG-13: violence, risque humor, tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Pokemon – Adventures on the Orange Islands Box Set

Pokemon - Adventures on the Orange Islands Box Set

The Orange Islands continuity (1999) serves as a bridge between the longer Pokemon storylines about the Indigo League (1997) and Johto League (1999) adventures. Professor Oak sends Ash, Misty and Brock to the Orange Islands to retrieve the mysterious GS Pokeball found by fellow researcher Professor Ivy. When they reach her lab, moonstruck Brock decides to stay with the Professor and her three female assistants. Ash and Misty are soon joined by Tracey, a “Pokemon Watcher” in training who sketches. After the perpetually amorous Brock, he makes a rather bland companion, although the caricatures of Groucho Marx and Clint Eastwood they encounter liven things up a bit. The characters roam aimlessly from island to island, escaping the snares of the inept Team Rocket, who stalk them in a submarine disguised as a giant Magicarp and a balloon that looks like Meowth. Ash wins the Coral Eye, Sea Ruby, Spike Shell, and Jade Star badges, which qualify him for the Orange League Tournament, where he finally learns to make his recalcitrant Charizard obey him. These stories lack a narrative arc: Ash’s battles at the various gyms don’t escalate, nor is there any sense of urgency to the mission to return the GS ball. The adventure concludes with Ash, Misty, and Tracey returning to Pallet Town, just in time to encounter the long-absent Gary. Professor Oak invites Tracey to become his assistant, so Brock, who’s been jilted by Ivy and her assistants, sets out with Ash and Misty for the Johto League.
