The Dragon Ball features Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle (Majinjou no Nemuri Hime, 1987), Mystical Adventure (Maka Fushigi Daiboken, 1988), and The Path to Power (Saikyou e no Michi, 1996), also known as “The Way to Become the Strongest,” were follow-ups to Curse of the Blood Rubies in 1986. When Devil’s Castle opens, Goku is a just a boy. He meets an equally young Krillin, who unfortunately looks like a character from South Park. Both of them want to train with Master Roshi, who insists he can only afford to support one student. Roshi sends them to capture the Sleeping Princess from the castle of vampire-demon Count Lucifer, a mission that pits the two boys against each other. Their adventure doesn’t quite unfold the way it was supposed to, as young heroes run into Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Pwar. In Mystical Adventure, young Goku and Krillin have just completed their training with Master Roshi. The old lecher decides to test his student’s skills at a prestigious martial-arts tournament held by the Emperor Chaozu. The Emperor’s lieutenant, Master Shen, has gathered six of the Dragon Balls to use in his plot to usurp throne. However, Bulma, Oolong and company are also after the Dragon Balls so Bulma can once again wish for a boyfriend.

The Path to Power re-introduces the regular cast: Bulma, the first girl Goku has ever seen, recruits him to help her find the Dragon Balls. With some help from their usual allies, they battle the Red Ribbon Army at the Muscle Tower. Goku makes a new friend: the misprogrammed android, Eighter. Like Mystical Adventure, Path to Power consists of recut footage from the TV series. In all three films, the stories are just set-ups for the familiar mixture of martial-arts mayhem and slapstick comedy. Goku beats his enemies to a pulp after hard battles; Bulma fusses; Master Roshi leers at every female who crosses his path: All ends happily, with Goku victorious. In short, the films provide exactly what Dragon Ball fans love and expect. (Rated TV PG: violence, ethnic stereotypes, nudity, risque humor, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Dragon Ball Z – Season Two (Namek and Captain Ginyu Sagas) (1996)

Dragon Ball Z - Season Two (Namek and Captain Ginyu Sagas)

Amazon.com

The second season of the wildly popular Dragon Ball Z comprises the “Namek” and “Captain Ginyu” sagas. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma travel to the planet Namek to find an even more powerful set of Dragon Balls that can restore the lives of Tenshinhan, Yamucha, Chaozu and Piccolo, who were killed by Vegeta during the first season. (Their souls continue to train with King Kai in the Other World.) All is not well on Namek: the arch-villain Frieza, who looks and sounds a bit like Truman Capote, also desires the Dragon Balls. If he uses them to obtain eternal life, he’ll rule the universe forever. With a cadre of lieutenants that includes Vegeta, he slaughters the Namekians to gain the supernatural orbs. After his injuries have been healed by a magic senzu bean, Goku heads to Namek. En route, he trains at 100 gravities, raising his powers enormously. Vegeta believes Goku may be the legendary Super Saiyan that appears once a millennium–except he lacks the requisite love of battle. This version of Goku is less aggressive, and he uncharacteristically uses his brain (never his greatest asset) to defeat Ginyu, Frieza’s second-in-command. Unlike Season 1–Vegeta Saga, Season 2ends on a cliff-hanger. Skeptics may find Goku’s adventures needlessly protracted, over the top, and even silly. But for millions of boys, they provide the special blend of comradeship, martial arts training, and take-no-prisoners battles they love. The newly remastered edition includes the original Japanese dialogue for the first time. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, minor risque humor, brief nudity, tobacco and alcohol use) –Charles Solomon

Dragon Ball Z: Season Eight (Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas)

Dragon Ball Z: Season Eight (Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas)

    Amazon.com

The eighth and penultimate season of Dragon Ball Z pits the Z Fighters, the Supreme Kai, and his attendant Kibito against the evil wizard Babidi, who hopes to release the monster Buu, which his father Bibidi created. (The names are apparently a back-handed salute to Walt Disney’s Cinderella.) Goku, who’s technically dead but still visting from the Other World, joins Vegeta and Gohan in the initial fights against Babidi’s minions. As the battles escalate, Babidi use Vegeta’s overweening pride to entrap the Saiyan Prince and turn him against his allies. It’s all Goku can do to win Vegeta back, and the energy loosed in their stand-off enables Babidi to free Buu. Instead of one of the over-muscled behemoths the Z Fighters usually tackle, Buu is an obnoxious, infantile creature who looks like a sumo wrestler molded out of pink marshmallows. But he’s incredibly powerful and resilient: even the Saiyans can’t defeat him. Goku realizes only one warrior can destroy Buu: Goten and Trunks in their Super-Saiyan forms must fuse to form an uber-hero. The boys initially balk, as the Dance of Fusion looks and feels silly. But Gohan and Picollo whip them into shape and the formidable Gotenks appears. Season 8 offers much more action and excitement than the World Tournament story that takes up most of Season 7. But unlike the earlier DBZ adventures, the Babidi & Majin Buu Sagas end on a cliffhanger, with the fate of the Earth and its inhabitants hanging in the balance.
