Based on the feature Blood: The Last Vampire (2000), Blood+ (2005) combines elements of the magical girl, vampire and biomedical experiments out-of-control genres. In the original film, Saya, the last true vampire, battled the bloodthirsty demons attacking an American base in Japan during the Vietnam War. This Saya has lived for more than 100 years, but remembers little of her past. The magical guardian Hagi appears and presents Saya with a special sword: she must cut herself and allow her blood to flow into channels in its blade. Only her blood can destroy the artificially created monsters known as Chiropterans. The sinister conglomerate Cinq Fleches who created the Chiropterans is pitted against the secret society the Red Shield, whose members include Hagi and Saya. Blood flows freely during the ensuing battles, escapes, and flashbacks, as Saya whines, fusses, and cowers while her friends get stomped. The filmmakers arbitrarily change the rules of the story as it stumbles along. The characters repeatedly say that only Saya can kill a Chiropteran, but near the end of the first season, the hooded figures called the Schiff appear, who hack Chiropterans to pieces with their swords. As Saya is a vampire, she needs blood to stay alive, but she never bites anybody and spent years in a human family without seeking blood (or having problems with silver and garlic). A sixth disc is devoted entirely to interviews with the filmmakers. Unrated, suitable for ages 16 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use, ethnic stereotypes) –Charles Solomon

Nazca – Blood Rivals (Vol. 2) (2000)

Nazca - Blood Rivals (Vol. 2)

This improbable fantasy continues, as a group of Japanese high school students explore their previous lives as Inca warriors. Kyoji, the 17-year-old hero, learns that his best friends, the mountain-climbing Dan and Seino, who talks to insects, also are reincarnated Incas. The three young men ally themselves with Yuka, the beautiful fiancee of Kyoji’s kendo instructor, Tate. But Tate has assumed his former identity as the warrior Yawaru: he plans to let loose the god Iriyatesse to destroy most of humanity, allowing him to realize his vision of a “purified” civilization. To assist in this scheme, Tate has assembled the psychotic Shiogami; Shiogami’s half-sister Tatsuko, who seems to nurture an incestuous passion for her brother; and the nerdy Daimon. In “Decisive Battle,” Tate uses Iriyatesse’s power to wreck a nearby town, killing thousands of people and revealing the extent of his megalomania.

“Nazca” features some handsome designs that evoke the Nazca line figures and Incan gold work. Tsuneyoshi Saito’s elaborate score mixes Western classical music, Peruvian-inspired melodies, and pseudo-Philip Glass minimalism, although having Incas chant the “Scotch Snap” theme from the first movement of Dvorak’s New World Symphony sounds more than a little incongruous.

Rated 13 and older for violence and profanity. –Charles Solomon

Product Description

The awakening memories of past lives as Incas has turned Kyoji’s mentor, Tate, into a cold and calculating enemy bent upon a 1,000 year old ambition to purify the human race. While Kyoji refuses to give up on his teacher, he must resume his past opposition to Tate’s attempts to revive the powerful Inca magic, Illotese, or else Tate will kill millions of people! Tate and Kyoji both gather allies in the present who are linked to their past, but the ancient memories of past alliances conflict with relationships in the present. Which will be chosen – the past or the present?

A mixture of sci-fi and supernatural elements, the 2005 broadcast series Trinity Blood takes place in the far future, when humans and vampires vie for control of the Earth. Abel Nightroad is an itinerant priest and agent for AX, the covert branch of the Holy Office. But when a real threat appears, he transforms into an uber-beast who feeds on the blood of vampires. As he fulfills his duties, Abel is joined by Sister Noelle (sic) and assorted other agents. The storyline wanders aimlessly: The tale of a series of murders and assaults on cathedrals peters out, and a new narrative about a sinister archbishop’s plot to destroy Rome with a “silent noise” device develops. Before that story is resolved, Abel is off to Carthage and Constantinople, where he prevents Department of the Inquisition agents from interfering in delicate negotiations between the Vatican and the Empire. This overwrought fantasy eventually reaches a baroque finale that includes murder victims returning from the dead; aerial battles; CG mecha; creatures who are angelic, demonic, or possibly both dueling in the skies; and a veritable blizzard of symbolic feathers. The combination of gothic fantasy and potentially offensive pseudo-Catholic mumbo-jumbo recalls Hellsing (2001), on which the series was obviously modeled. Although it’s relentlessly silly and over the top, Trinity Blood remains popular with fans of vampire anime who prefer flashy visuals to coherent narratives. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 16 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, gore, grotesque imagery, tobacco and alcohol use, offensive religious imagery) –Charles Solomon

Vampires and The Vatican?…Holy Hell!

Armageddon… The ultimate sin of humanity, perpetrated upon itself, which cast the shroud of death across the world centuries ago. And out of that lasting darkness, they emerged… From the legends of ancient times, they have been called forth into the world anew… Vampires.

Two races, Terran and Methuselah, human and vampire, are locked in a struggle for existence, trembling on the brink of war. Some seek the path to a peaceful coexistence, while others pursue a dangerous shift in the balance of power? And the world?s enemy, Contra Mundi, is starting to move. Cooperation and goodwill between the two races may be their only chance for survival.

Abel Nightroad, a touring priest for the Vatican, walks calmly where others fear to tread. A member of the formidable AX, tasked with the protection of the fragile equilibrium. Neither human nor vampire, with an awkward yet optimistic nature, this Father is a force wholly his own. When the greater threat emerges, the enemy of my enemy is my friend? And Abel Nightroad seeks a safe path for all.
