Patlabor - The Mobile Police, The TV Series Boxed Set (Vols. 1-4)

Amazon.com

Masami Yuuki’s serial manga Mobile Police Patlabor was set in a not-too-distant future when heavy physical work is performed by giant robots called Labors. As the robots also get involved in accidents and crimes, the Tokyo police force needs Patlabors (“Patrol Labors” elided) to handle them. The 47-episode broadcast series (actually the follow-up to a 7-part OVA) retains its freshness and good humor. Determined to succeed as a robot pilot, perky Noa Izumi joins the crew of oddballs who make up Special Vehicles Division 2: thoughtful Asuma Shinohara, no-nonsense New York Police officer Clancy Kanuka, loud-mouth Isao Ota, and understated Captain Goto. Less heroic than Gundam pilots but more serious than the Dai-Guard crew, these misfits interact in ways that suggest a comic version of Hill Street Blues.

Their assignments range from rescuing a government minister and saving an ancient tree to thwarting terrorists and guarding a winter carnival. Captain Goto observes dryly that the robots “have been called everything from jokes to money pits to piles of useless waste.” But when a military experiment runs amok or a mutant monster gets loose in a forest, Division 2 is there to save the day–even if others get the credit for their work. The 18 episodes in this collection offer the combination of mecha adventure and ensemble comedy that have made Patlabor such a popular franchise. (Rated 3 and older, but more appropriate for ages 8 and older; minor violence, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Tenchi Muyo – OVA DVD Boxed Set

Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

Amazon.com essential video

Although the title means something along the lines of “no need for Tenchi,” everyone wants the hapless hero of this popular series. These 13?OAV episodes reunite the cast from the TV show, but with some changes. Sasami is initially much younger and less domestic; grandfather Masaki turns out to be Yosho, the long-lost Jurai prince who was betrothed to Ayeka centuries ago; genius-in-residence Wasshu reveals an unexpected bond with interstellar outlaw Ryoko. The tone is a little racier than the broadcast version: Ryoko runs around naked and the attempts to seduce the terminally klutzy Tenchi are more pointed.

In the first adventure (episodes 1-7), Tenchi inadvertently wakes a mummified demon who was imprisoned at the Masaki family shrine 700?years ago–none other than space pirate extraordinaire Ryoko. The problems she causes are dwarfed by the arrival of Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, bubble-brained Galactic Police Agent Miyoshi–and interstellar criminal Kagato. Assuming the role (and costume) of the Crown Prince of Jurai, Tenchi defeats the evil Kagato with a magic sword that resembles the lightsabers in Star Wars.

Unexpected arrivals keep the Masaki household in chaos in the later, shorter adventures (episodes?8-13), including a baby cousin of Tenchi’s, a shape-shifting robot who impersonates Ryoko, and the Emperor and Empress of Jurai. The writers occasionally lose track of the plot, especially in episode?13, “Here Comes Jurai,” but Tenchi has never been noted for its logic. In all the episodes, the filmmakers manage to balance interplanetary threats, teenage romance, and broad comedy with their usual aplomb.

The Tenchi Encyclopedia (powered by Wasshu OS) offers short biographies of the main characters with clips and stills, pencil tests, digital comics, Japanese commercials, and full credits for the series. A must-have for Tenchi fans. –Charles Solomon

The second season of Naruto continues as the next phase of the Chunin exams begins: individual combat among the surviving candidates. Kakashi-sensei seals the curse mark Orochimaru set on Sasuke’s neck, but its effect on the talented young ninja remains uncertain. Naruto beats his opponent using decidedly unconventional means: only everyone’s favorite knucklehead could turn an attack of flatulence into a jutsu. As the matches progress, the focus shifts from Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to the secondary characters Hinata and Rock Lee. The offspring of a great ninja clan, Hinata seems too timid to live up to the family tradition of violence, but she fights valiantly against her cousin Neiji. Rock Lee has no talent for the magical jutsu the other students employ, so he’s trained himself mercilessly in physical techniques. He’s pitted against Gara, the icy trainee who fights with clouds of enchanted sand. Lee and Hinata overtax their resources but demonstrate true ninja spirit–and win the respect of Naruto and Sakura. The struggles of the secondary characters add some emotional depth to the inevitably repetitious fight scenes. The season ends on multiple cliffhangers, with Lee and Sasuke in the hospital and Naruto beginning a grueling training regimen with a new sensei to prepare for the final Chunin combat. The Special Limited Edition comes with a Mist Village headband and wrist sweatband, plus a Mist Village bag to carry them in. (Rated T+ Older Teen; suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, toilet humor) –Charles Solomon

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing – Complete Operations Boxed Set (2000)

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - Complete Operations Boxed Set

Amazon.com
Gundam Wing (1995-96), a 49-part series in the Alternate Universe continuity, scored a hit in the U.S. when it aired on the Cartoon Network. In the year 195 A.C. (After Colony), much of humanity has emigrated to orbiting Space Colonies; those who remained on Earth are governed by the oppressive United Earth Sphere Alliance. But the real power is wielded by the sinister Romefeller Foundation, whose directors plot to control Earth and the Colonies through their puppet military entity OZ, led by Zechs Marquise and Treize Khushrenada. Five teenage pilots in Gundam mecha suits strike at Earth, hoping to aid the rebel Colonists: sullen Heero Yuy, happy-go-lucky Duo Maxwell, former circus acrobat Trowa Barton, sensitive Quatre Raberba, and icy WuFei Chang. The convoluted story line pits the Romefeller Foundation, the rebellious “Treize Faction” of OZ, the Gundam Pilots, and royal pacifist Relena Peacecraft against each other. But it’s primarily a battle between the adherents of a samurai-style code of honor and the soulless adherents of realpolitik. When the Romefeller Foundation begins manufacturing Mobile Dolls (pilotless battle robots), the Gundam pilots, Zechs, and Treize object, not because they can make the Foundation all-powerful, but because they will deprive human warriors of the singular emotions experienced through heroism in battle.

The uninitiated may have trouble following the plot: strange revelations abound (e.g., Relena discovers Zechs is her long-lost brother) and characters disappear for a dozen or more episodes, only to return when a deus ex machina is needed. But Gundam fans aren’t interested in tightly woven story lines or credible character arcs, and Gundam Wing delivers plenty of battles between the splendidly designed robots. It’s a classic confrontation between good guys with invincible weapons and soulless bad guys who can’t hit the broad side of a robot. (Rated 13 and older: occasional profanity, robot vs. robot violence) –Charles Solomon

Now and Then, Here and There (Complete Collector’s Boxed Set)

Now and Then, Here and There (Complete Collector's Boxed Set)

Shuzo “Shu” Matsutani, a rambunctious adolescent kendo student, encounters a mysterious girl named Lala-Ru in an abandoned factory near his home. When she’s captured by hostile mecha, Shu is taken with her to another world, to the unfortunately named fortress-ship Hellywood, ruled by the psychotic King Hamdo. The apparently ancient Lala-Ru can produce vast quantities of water, which Hamdo desires. Shu is imprisoned, beaten, and tortured before being inducted into Hamdo’s army of child-soldiers. He doggedly insists that he must protect Lala-Ru, despite her great powers. They escape Hellywood, wander through the desert, and reach a pueblo-like village where they defeat Hamdo. The rambling storyline recalls both El Hazard and Escaflowne. What sets Now and Then apart is the gritty realism of the violence: unlike other anime characters, Shu seems to feel real pain when Hamdo’s thugs beat him. Although the rape of the Earth girl Sara is suggested rather than depicted, she has to decide whether to keep or abort the child. These depictions of the brutality of war give Now and Then a grim power many better-written and better-animated series lack. The most interesting segment on the “bonus disc” juxtaposes the animated version of the final episode with the storyboards. “From Then to Now” includes clips from the audition tapes of the actors playing Hamdo (Jack Taylor) and Shu (a surprisingly burly Ed Paul) along with interviews and standard behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions. Rated 16 Up for considerable violence, minor profanity, adult themes. –Charles Solomon

Product Description
