The Teen-Centered Book Club: Readers into Leaders (Libraries Unlimited Professional Guides for Young Adult Librarians Series) (Paperback)

The Teen-Centered Book Club: Readers into Leaders (Libraries Unlimited Professional Guides for Young Adult Librarians Series)

From School Library Journal

Two experienced youth-services librarians introduce the idea of teen-centered book clubs. Different from traditional adult book clubs in their focus on the participants rather than the books, this type of programming offers an opportunity for libraries to draw new teens into the building and to keep active patrons involved. In clear prose supported by research, the authors cover every aspect of the program, from assessing the needs of the library and teens to conducting successful meetings to evaluating activities. Sample book titles and themes are ready for use or may act as a springboard for new ideas. An excellent reference, this book will be invaluable to school and public librarians looking for a new way to connect with teens.?Beth Gallego, Los Angeles Public Library, North Hollywood

From Booklist

From the first words in the preface, the authors, experienced YA professionals, emphasize “teen-centered”: “Teen-centered book clubs are grounded in the admittedly radical idea that the clubs are not primarily about library programming or even about books (!) but are all about teens.” The guide is divided into two parts: planning the club (types of clubs, knowledge of teens, etc.) and guiding it (book selection, keeping discussions meaningful, assessment, etc.). There are examples of surveys and club rules, and every chapter has tip boxes, such as “Who Should Make Up the Questions?” and “Just for School Libraries.” Readers looking for ideas will find lots of attention paid to details like food choices, icebreakers, lists of possible books, and promotion. Over and over, the authors remind us to listen and learn from the young people we’re working with, plan thoroughly, get input, and evaluate regularly. A very helpful title for libraries wanting to create a teen book group or make an existing one more dynamic. Susan Gooden
