The Dead Zone (Ora no Gohan wo Kaese!! “Return My Gohan!!” 1989) and The World’s Strongest (Kono yo de Ichiban Tsuyoi Yatsu: “This World’s Strongest Guy,” 1990) were the first two Dragon Ball Z features; eleven more would follow over the next several years. In both features, unsavory characters try to use the power of the Dragon Balls to obtain revenge and rule the Earth. After Shenglong grants him eternal life, Garlic, Jr., seeks to destroy Kami and avenge his father in The Dead Zone. When it becomes apparent he can’t withstand the combined power of Kami and the Z-Fighters, Garlic creates a “Dead Zone,” a sort of black hole that threatens to engulf everyone and everything. Gohan defeats him, turning the gift of eternal life into a terrible curse. Goku wisely decides not to tell Chichi about Gohan’s newly discovered powers. In The World’s Strongest, the Z-fighters are pitted against a resurrected mad scientist (rendered variously as Dr. Willow, Wheelo, or Uilo) and his hench-creatures. Goku asks the Earth’s inhabitants to lend him the energy needed to destroy the evil genius. Both films feel like TV specials: Dead Zone is only 40 minutes long, World’s Strongest, an hour. The viewer can choose English dialogue with US or Japanese music in stereo or the original Japanese tracks in mono. (The set is also being released in Blu-Ray.) The Dead Zone:

Goku rushes to save Gohan, but arrives at the fortress just as Garlic Jr. summons the Eternal Dragon! Krillin and Piccolo try to help Goku, but their combined powers are no match for Garlic Jr., who creates a Dead Zone to suck the heroes into oblivion! Suddenly, Goku begins to show his hidden power, but will it be enough?!

The World’s Strongest

The sinister Dr. Wheelo has been freed from his icy tomb! With his dedicated and devious assistant Dr. Kochin, these mad scientists are plotting to unleash their fearsome biotechnology and take over the world! Of course there’s one hitch in the plan… Dr. Wheelo exists only as a brain in a jar!

The evil doctor must seek out a body on Earth that is as strong as his mind is amazing! Dr. Kochin and his android henchmen kidnap Piccolo and Master Roshi to determine who is the most powerful fighter on Earth!

Goku, Gohan and Krillin rush into action to save their friends, but Dr. Wheelo’s minions are more than a match for them in battle. It looks grim when Piccolo falls under the disembodied villain’s control, and Wheelo’s next target for mental domination? Goku! Will our heroes keep their wits about them long enough to be victorious or will they lose their minds?

Bardock the Father of Goku (Tatta Hitori no Saishuu Kessen: “Lonely Final Battle,” 1990) and The History of Trunks (Zebbo he no Hankou!! Nokosareta Chou-Senshi Gohan to Torunkusu: “Resist Despair!! The Ultimate Surviving Fighters: Gohan and Trunks,” 1993) were the first and second Dragon Ball Z TV specials. The programs present the back stories of later adventures. Bardock was one of the Saiyans Frieza used as mercenaries to conquer other worlds. But Frieza and his lieutenant Doodoria feared the Saiyans might eventually become strong enough to threaten them. Doodoria murdered Bardock’s squadron; Frieza destroyed the Saiyan planet. Vegeta, Nappa and Goku (ne Kakarot) were the only survivors. Before he was killed, Bardock was cursed with the ability to see the future, including his own brutal death. But that psychic power also enabled Bardock to see that his infant son would grow up to destroy the monstrous Frieza. The History of Trunks is set further in the future: the androids 17 and 18 that Dr. Gero created are ravaging the Earth. As Goku died of a heart ailment several years earlier, no one can defeat them, not even Gohan. Trunks, the son of Vegeta and Bulma, fights 17 and 18, but loses ignominiously. Only one hero can save the world: Trunks launches the time machine Bulma invented to take medicine back to Goku that will save his life and alter the course of history. The Dragon Ball features Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle (Majinjou no Nemuri Hime, 1987), Mystical Adventure (Maka Fushigi Daiboken, 1988), and The Path to Power (Saikyou e no Michi, 1996), also known as “The Way to Become the Strongest,” were follow-ups to Curse of the Blood Rubies in 1986. When Devil’s Castle opens, Goku is a just a boy. He meets an equally young Krillin, who unfortunately looks like a character from South Park. Both of them want to train with Master Roshi, who insists he can only afford to support one student. Roshi sends them to capture the Sleeping Princess from the castle of vampire-demon Count Lucifer, a mission that pits the two boys against each other. Their adventure doesn’t quite unfold the way it was supposed to, as young heroes run into Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Pwar. In Mystical Adventure, young Goku and Krillin have just completed their training with Master Roshi. The old lecher decides to test his student’s skills at a prestigious martial-arts tournament held by the Emperor Chaozu. The Emperor’s lieutenant, Master Shen, has gathered six of the Dragon Balls to use in his plot to usurp throne. However, Bulma, Oolong and company are also after the Dragon Balls so Bulma can once again wish for a boyfriend.

The Path to Power re-introduces the regular cast: Bulma, the first girl Goku has ever seen, recruits him to help her find the Dragon Balls. With some help from their usual allies, they battle the Red Ribbon Army at the Muscle Tower. Goku makes a new friend: the misprogrammed android, Eighter. Like Mystical Adventure, Path to Power consists of recut footage from the TV series. In all three films, the stories are just set-ups for the familiar mixture of martial-arts mayhem and slapstick comedy. Goku beats his enemies to a pulp after hard battles; Bulma fusses; Master Roshi leers at every female who crosses his path: All ends happily, with Goku victorious.
