The broadcast series Avenger (2003) is set in the distant future, when the remnants of humanity huddle in domed cities on Mars and inter-city gladiatorial fights determine the distribution of the planet’s scant resources. Champion fighter Layla Ashley finds Nei, a robot-child, and embarks on a strange pilgrimage, accompanied by roguish repairman Speedy. As the trio wanders the red planet, the audience learns through flashbacks and Morris-the-explainer speeches that: (1) Layla is seeking revenge for something in her childhood, (2) humans have somehow lost the ability to reproduce, (3) Nei is the long-awaited “Child of Destiny,” (4) Earth was somehow destroyed, and (5) the moon is approaching Mars, with dire consequences.Avenger suffers from both too much and too little story. Layla, Nei and Speedy waste so much time wandering that the climax of the tale goes by hastily and fails to make an impact. The filmmakers don’t explain what’s going on satisfactorily, and the story collapses under the burden of its mythic pretensions. The distaff equivalent of a taciturn warrior-hero, Layla rarely speaks, even when asked a direct question; Nei spends more time looking cute than saying or doing anything. Neither of them is very interesting, which leaves a void at the center of the series. Although Avenger offers some striking visuals of the moon brooding over Martian ruins, it’s overly long and boring. (Rated 13 and older: nudity, violence, violence against women) –Charles Solomon

Each of the snazzy 25-minute installments from the most popular Japanese animated TV series of 1998 is a satisfying adventure tale about a futuristic hipster bounty hunter. This is an elegant action-comedy anime, with smoothly integrated CGI space-flight elements, gorgeous graphics, blues harmonica and sax riffs on the soundtrack, and a no-sweat post-Tarantino attitude. Despite occasional eruptions of gun-fu Asian-action violence, and some intimations of heavy-duty drug use (in the first of 26 episodes, one especially noxious narcotic is administered as an aerosol spray straight onto the user’s eyeballs), the tone is surprisingly convivial. None of the generic tough elements are grim or mean-spirited. Lanky antihero Spike Spiegel is a planet-hopping freelance hunter with an ex-cop sidekick named Jet, a loopy fellow hunter named Faye, a teenage computer hack, and a genetically enhanced Welsh corgi assistant in tow. The follow-up to the popular Gundam Seed (2002-2003), Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (2004-2005) takes place two years later, in 73, Cosmic Era. The hero of the Destiny is Shin Asuka, whose family was killed during the previous war: he pilots the latest and most complex Gundam, which assembles itself in midair, like Gekigangar III in Nadesico. Outstanding animation and a compelling environmental message make Origin: Spirits of the Past an above-average anime feature, especially for younger viewers. Despite an abundance of elements that many anime fans will find familiar, Origin distinguishes itself with a story that lends itself (like many anime features) to a variety of spectacular settings. As the fairy-tale story begins, it’s been 300 years since terrible events left civilization in ruins. Now, in a post-apocalyptic setting where the crumbling remains of vast cities lie in close proximity to the encroaching forest, humans live on both sides of a brewing conflict. For young Agito, the son of an aging hero, life is relatively peaceful in Neutral City, a community built within the ruins of a once-major city. But when he wanders into a forbidden zone of the forest, where plant-like “druids” protect their world from outsiders, he discovers a cryogenic stasis tube containing Toola, a girl who’s been resting in stasis for 300 years. Her father had been in charge of the “Earth Rejuvenation Project” that led to a technological disaster, and her emerging friendship with Agito is threatened when they find themselves on opposing sides of an ideological conflict, and Agito must save Toola from her potentially destructive convictions. He does so by becoming “enhanced”–essentially melding his human form with the forest, aligning himself with the powerful forces of nature.
