Gravion (2002), a sci-fi adventure from the Gonzo studio, incorporates elements of Gundam, Evangelion, and countless fan-service series. While searching for his missing older sister, 17-year-old Eiji Shigura stumbles into the castle of mysterious zillionaire Klein Sandman. The reclusive tycoon knows that the alien Zeravire are planning to attack the Earth, and has prepared a counter-weapon: Heavy Metal God Gravion, a giant mecha formed when six smaller machines combine. Eiji has the “G-factor” enzyme in his blood that enables him to pilot one of the component mecha. He’s soon training and quarreling with other “Gran Diva” pilots, most of whom are buxom young women in decollete costumes. This very derivative series suffers from too many characters, all of them underdeveloped, but devotees of giant mecha sagas and fan service jiggle shots may not care. (Rated 13 and older: violence, nudity, risque humor, alcohol use) –Charles Solomon

Gravion Zwei, Vol. 1: Eye of the Storm

Gravion Zwei, Vol. 1: Eye of the Storm

Amazon.com

The second (2004) season of Gravion mixes several genres: sci-fi, mecha, comedy, adventure, and jiggle. Under the leadership of dashing Klein Sandman, the elite G-Knights continue their battles against the alien Zeravire. Eiji and Taro remain the only males in the squadron of nubile young women. Their individually piloted machines combine to form Heavy Metal God Gravion, a handsomely designed mecha in the Gundam tradition. The poorly staged battle sequences fail to showcase the gigantic robot, but it doesn’t really matter: Gravion Zwei is more about fan service than military service. The girls range from mildly curvaceous Ena to Mizuki, who, like June, is bustin’ out all over. Viewers see a lot of Eiji’s bare buns in episode 3, suggesting that fan-service nudity is becoming more gender neutral. But Gravion Zwei is an inane throw-away of a series. (Rated TV MA: violence, nudity, risque humor, alcohol use) –Charles Solomon
