These cities are maintained and supplied by private corporations, but at what cost to the inhabitants living within them? In a Siberian Domepolis, virtual game champion Gainer Sanga is arrested on suspicion of Exodus, an unauthorized venture beyond the dome walls and strictly prohibited by the government. In prison, he meets Gain Bijou, a mercenary bent on escaping and together the two will steal a mysterious Overman out of Duke Medaiyu s mansion. Fighting back the Siberian Railway Patrol forces, they both lead a massive Exodus out of the city to the east land Yapan, where their ancestors are originally from. Witness this bold new challenge from Mobile Suit Gundam director Yoshiyuki Tomino as he defies genre classifications and creates a new style, blending intense mecha action and light-hearted comedy.

My Hime: Anime Legends Complete Collection

My Hime: Anime Legends Complete Collection

Amazon.com
Hime means “princess” in Japanese, but in the broadcast series My-Hime (2004), it’s also an acronym for Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment–or certain girls who possess supernatural abilities. Mai Tokiha and her brother Takumi discover their new school, Fuka Academy, has become the focus of the battle against the Orphans: malevolent monsters who can only be defeated by the HiME. Each HiME has a “Child,” a sort of half-mecha creature that fights with her against the bizarre Orphans. Mai discovers she’s a powerful HiME, just in time to enter the no-holds- barred struggle against the agents of the sinister, all-powerful Searrs Foundation, who’ve secretely been summoning the Orphans. That storyline comes to a premature end in Episode #15 and another, related but even more confusing plot begins. My-Hime features a large cast; some of the members are sympathetic and even endearing, but the muddled story requires so much exposition, the audience doesn’t get a chance to know them. An even bigger problem is that the filmmakers can’t decide if they’re making a magical girl vs. monster adventure, a shojo (girls’) high school romance, or a fan-service farce. The battles against the grotesque Orphans are violent and loaded with CG special effects, but they’re juxtaposed with cheesecake illustrations, discussions about bras, and nosebleed jokes. Panty shots and close-ups of cleavage follow tearful romantic declarations. Viewers can’t tell if they’re supposed to cheer, snicker, or sniffle. Wolf’s Rain: Anime Legends Complete Collection Vol. 1

Wolf's Rain: Anime Legends Complete Collection Vol. 1

Amazon.com

Although wolves are supposed to have died out more than 200 years earlier, a quartet of lycanthropes prowl the ruined world of this post-apocalyptic fantasy. The shape-shifters include Tsume, a cynical criminal; eager, naive Toboe; perpetually hungry Hige; and charismatic Kiba, who’s seeking “Rakuen,” the prophesied wolf-paradise. Tied to his search are the Moon Flowers, and Cheza, a girl somehow created from those blossoms. But the wolf-boys aren’t the only ones interested in the flower-girl. Scientist Cher Degre wants to continue studying Cheza in her laboratory, so she enlists the aid of detective Hubb. The fallen Noble Darcia and Lord Orkham and his minions are after Cheza, and she’s somehow linked to Quent, a hunter bent on exterminating the wolf-humans.

The world of high-tech machinery and the world of curses, prophecies, alchemy and shape-shifters would seem to be at odds, yet the filmmakers manage to integrate the two in this often intriguing fantasy-adventure. The dark palate, angular designs, alienated characters, and dramatic camera angles will appeal to fans of Blood: the Last Vampire, and “Rakuen,” the paradise Kiba seeks, remains a tantalizing promise. But the plot of Wolf’s Rain is complicated with secondary stories and minor characters the filmmakers fail to develop in the first half of the series. Episodes #15-18 consist almost entirely of flashbacks with only an occasional new scene or line of dialogue, which make the story feel both padded and underdeveloped. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Anime Legends, Vol. 2

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Anime Legends, Vol. 2

Amazon.com
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) gets increasingly complicated, as Amuro Ray and Char Azanable from the first Gundam series appear. The confrontation between the rebel forces of the A.E.U.G. (Anti-Earth Union Group) and the power-hungry paramilitary Titans becomes a triangle of competing powers when a relict Zeon force arrives on the scene, led by Haman Karn, who is determined to restore the Zabi family to power. The storyline gets even more tangled as Kamille Bidan uses his Newtype powers to establish psychic bonds not only with his girlfriend Fa Yuiry, but with Sarah, Four, Reccoa, Emma, and Rosammy. These links feel repetitious, as do the metal-hand-to-metal-hand duels between Kamille’s Zeta Gundam and the enemy Mobile Suits that occur in every episode. There’s little sense of a broad story arc, and at this early phase of anime, the filmmakers were still learning how to write credible female characters. Fa comes across as a twit along the lines of Minmei in Robotech, and she’s saddled with two thoroughly obnoxious orphans. Zeta Gundam lacks the depth of characterization that made 08 MS Team memorable and the CG-assisted space battles in Gundam Seed and other recent installments. But for viewers interested in following the development of the popular and long-running Gundam franchise, it’s must viewing.
