Cowboy Bebop – The Perfect Sessions (Limited Edition Complete Series Boxed Set)

Cowboy Bebop - The Perfect Sessions (Limited Edition Complete Series Boxed Set)

Amazon.com essential video

Each of the snazzy 25-minute installments from the most popular Japanese animated TV series of 1998 is a satisfying adventure tale about a futuristic hipster bounty hunter. This is an elegant action-comedy anime, with smoothly integrated CGI space-flight elements, gorgeous graphics, blues harmonica and sax riffs on the soundtrack, and a no-sweat post-Tarantino attitude. Despite occasional eruptions of gun-fu Asian-action violence, and some intimations of heavy-duty drug use (in the first of 26 episodes, one especially noxious narcotic is administered as an aerosol spray straight onto the user’s eyeballs), the tone is surprisingly convivial. None of the generic tough elements are grim or mean-spirited. Lanky antihero Spike Spiegel is a planet-hopping freelance hunter with an ex-cop sidekick named Jet, a loopy fellow hunter named Faye, a teenage computer hack, and a genetically enhanced Welsh corgi assistant in tow. The emphasis is on clever twists of plot in an episodic short-story format with as many wisecracks as punches being thrown. –David Chute

The follow-up to the popular Gundam Seed (2002-2003), Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (2004-2005) takes place two years later, in 73, Cosmic Era. The hero of the Destiny is Shin Asuka, whose family was killed during the previous war: he pilots the latest and most complex Gundam, which assembles itself in midair, like Gekigangar III in Nadesico. Shin has to fight three raiders who steal new-model Gundams during the visit of Princess Cagalli Athha of Orb to ZAFT Chairman Durandal. Athrun Zala, the hero of Gundam Seed, has given up combat duty to serve as an aid to Athha, but by the end of episode 5, he’s back in the cockpit where he belongs. The conflict between the Naturals and the genetically enhanced Coordinators remains the underlying cause of the military and political struggles. The raid on the ZAFT base gets Gundam Seed Destiny off to a roaring start, and director Mitsuo Fukuda choreographs the land and space mecha battles with impressive skill. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity, minor risque humor) –Charles Solomon

Kimba The White Lion Ultra DVD Box Set (Limited Edition) (2005)

Kimba The White Lion Ultra DVD Box Set (Limited Edition)

Amazon.com

Osamu Tezuka based Kimba the White Lion on his long-running manga Jungle Taitei (“Jungle Emperor”). Because it was partially funded by NBC Enterprises, the show remained episodic, with no sustained story arcs. Tezuka had wanted to adapt the storyline of the manga, which traced the main character’s childhood, adult years, and eventual death, followed by his son’s succession. When Kimba debuted in syndication in 1966, it was the first color Japanese series to air in the U.S.

Born on the ship transporting his mother to a European zoo, Kimba escapes and swims back to Africa, where he’s hailed as the successor to his father, Caesar. With the assistance of wise old Dan’l Baboon, bigmouth parrot Pauley Cracker, and kindly human Roger, Kimba protects all the animals in the jungle. He insists on good sportsmanship, honesty, and friendship, sometimes to the point of priggishness.

The unabashed moralizing, cute designs, and very limited animation make Kimba feel like a throwback to the mid-1950s, when cartoon series were pitched to very young children. By the time the series aired, American kids were watching much more sophisticated shows: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Beany and Cecil, and The Flintstones. The stories have some distinctly odd aspects: Kimba insists all the carnivores switch to a vegetable diet, and, in some episodes, he sleeps with the rug made from his father’s hide.

The extras include the original Japanese version of episode 1, scenes that were deleted from five episodes, and a 32-page booklet “How Kimba Came to Be” by Robin Leyden and Fred Patten (published in Fanta’s Zine in 1991). Kimba has been remade several times over the decades. (Not rated, suitable for ages 5 and older: cartoon violence) –Charles Solomon

Inuyasha Complete Delux Movies Box Set (Limited Edition) (2004)

Inuyasha Complete Delux Movies Box Set (Limited Edition)

Amazon.com

The four Inu-Yasha theatrical features pit the cast of Rumiko Takahashi’s “feudal fairy tale” against new foes: The search for the shards of the Shikon Jewel falls by the wayside as Kagome, Inu-Yasha, Shippo, Miroku, and Sango tackle these supernatural enemies. In Affections Touching Across Time (2001), the moth-demon Menomaru seeks to reclaim the powers of his father, who was defeated by Inu-Yasha’s father during the attempted Mongol invasion of 1274. The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass (2002) evokes the Japanese legend “The Tale of the Bamboo-Cutter,” when Kaguya appears, claiming to be the legendary Moon Princess. Swords of an Honorable Ruler (2003) reveals that Inu-Yasha’s father, the Great Dog Demon, possessed not two but three swords: Tetsusaiga, Tenseiga, and Sounga, which are linked to Earth, Heaven, and Hell, respectively. When the Sounga is accidentally freed, its aura raises the soul of Takemaru, the samurai who murdered Inu-Yasha’s mother. The villains in Fire on Mystic Island (2004) are the Four War Gods, powerful demons on the island of Houraijima, who preserve and augment their power by sacrificing half-demon children. The later films are darker and more violent, although the directors balance the mayhem against familiar comedic elements, especially Kagome and Inu-Yasha squabbling. The features all reflect larger budgets than the television series, as the filmmakers employ a variety of CG effects: explosions, lightning bolts, insects, monsters, and strangling tree roots. Affections Touching Across Time stands out as the handsomest of the films, with designs that suggest the woodblock prints of Kawase Hasui. The set includes CDs of the movie soundtracks and a booklet on the traditional Japanese instruments they feature, although more information on composer Kaoru Wada would have been nice. A must-have for Inu-Yasha fans. (Rated Teen: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery, brief nudity, alcohol use, risque humor) –Charles Solomon
