As Mobile Suit Gundam Seed continues, the struggle between the “Naturals” of the Earth Alliance Forces and the genetically enhanced “Coordinators” of ZAFT escalates. Although he’s a Coordinator, Kira Yamato has been fighting for the Naturals aboard the Archangel in a series of contests that pit him against his childhood friend, Athrun Zala of ZAFT. As the two teen-agers are ace mecha pilots, even major battles ultimately hinge on their man-to-man/Gundam-to-Gundam duels. Adding to the emotional complications are the loyalties Kira and Athrun feel towards their friends, both living and dead, and their affection for the rebellious princesses Cagalli and Flay. Anthrun’s ex-fiancee, singer Lacus Clyne, makes both young men realize the futility of the war they’re caught up in. When the Earth Alliance and ZAFT begin deploying atomic weapons, the need to end the conflict and establish peace becomes urgent. Kira, Cagalli, Athrun, and Lacus triumph over their violent superior officers in time to prevent a nuclear holocaust. The emotional struggles of the characters provide the setting for the many battles involving increasingly advanced mobile suits, which take place on the surface of the Earth, under water and, most spectacularly, in outer space. Gundam Seed delivers the blend of fantastic battles, splendidly designed robots, conflicted loyalties, and emotional entanglements that fans ofYoshiyuki Tomino?s Gundam universe love and expect. Episodes 21 through 50 were recut into the features Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: The Faraway Dawn (Movie 2) and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: The Rumbling Sky (Movie 3). The follow-up to the popular Gundam Seed (2002-2003), Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (2004-2005) takes place two years later, in 73, Cosmic Era. The hero of the Destiny is Shin Asuka, whose family was killed during the previous war: he pilots the latest and most complex Gundam, which assembles itself in midair, like Gekigangar III in Nadesico. Shin has to fight three raiders who steal new-model Gundams during the visit of Princess Cagalli Athha of Orb to ZAFT Chairman Durandal. Athrun Zala, the hero of Gundam Seed, has given up combat duty to serve as an aid to Athha, but by the end of episode 5, he’s back in the cockpit where he belongs. The conflict between the Naturals and the genetically enhanced Coordinators remains the underlying cause of the military and political struggles. The raid on the ZAFT base gets Gundam Seed Destiny off to a roaring start, and director Mitsuo Fukuda choreographs the land and space mecha battles with impressive skill. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Anime Legends, Vol. 2

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: Anime Legends, Vol. 2

Amazon.com
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) gets increasingly complicated, as Amuro Ray and Char Azanable from the first Gundam series appear. The confrontation between the rebel forces of the A.E.U.G. (Anti-Earth Union Group) and the power-hungry paramilitary Titans becomes a triangle of competing powers when a relict Zeon force arrives on the scene, led by Haman Karn, who is determined to restore the Zabi family to power. The storyline gets even more tangled as Kamille Bidan uses his Newtype powers to establish psychic bonds not only with his girlfriend Fa Yuiry, but with Sarah, Four, Reccoa, Emma, and Rosammy. These links feel repetitious, as do the metal-hand-to-metal-hand duels between Kamille’s Zeta Gundam and the enemy Mobile Suits that occur in every episode. There’s little sense of a broad story arc, and at this early phase of anime, the filmmakers were still learning how to write credible female characters. Fa comes across as a twit along the lines of Minmei in Robotech, and she’s saddled with two thoroughly obnoxious orphans. Zeta Gundam lacks the depth of characterization that made 08 MS Team memorable and the CG-assisted space battles in Gundam Seed and other recent installments. But for viewers interested in following the development of the popular and long-running Gundam franchise, it’s must viewing.
