Mobile Suit Gundam – Movie II (Soldiers of Sorrow) (1981)

Mobile Suit Gundam - Movie II (Soldiers of Sorrow)

Soldiers of Sorrow (1981) is the second of the three features that launched the landmark Gundam franchise: about two-thirds of the film is footage from episodes 16 to 30 of the TV series Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) intercut with new animation. Because so much material had to be condensed into two and a half hours, Amuro’s relationships with Lt. Matilda and Ms. Hamon end before they really begin. Amuro wrestles with his new identity as a soldier and the fact that he is a “NewType,” a human with psychic abilities that may represent an evolutionary jump. His problems are played out against the ongoing war between the Earth Federation and the space-based Principality of Zeon. Although Earth commands vastly superior resources, Zeon commander Char Aznable seems to have an unending supply of ships and mobile suits for attacks on Amuro’s ship, the White Base. Rated 13 Up: Minor profanity, violence. –Charles Solomon

Product Description

The Federation space ship White Base and its precious cargo of prototype mobile suits have returned to Earth, only to find themselves in enemy territory. As the White Base struggles across the planet’s surface to safety, Gundam pilot Amuro Ray must contend not only with the Duchy of Zeon’s fiercest warriors, but also with his own doubts and fears.

Set in 2070, this videogame-based, U.S.-Japanese co-production focuses on Col. John Blade: part cyborg, part human, and all cop. When Blade and his team from the law enforcement agency Hardcorps pursue a kidnapper through the city of Freeport, they suddenly find themselves confronting a mutant monster. This first battle introduces a standard, if slipshod story involving a sinister mega-corporation, illegal human genetic experiments, high-speed chases, gore, gun fights, metamorphic creatures, blood, family vendettas, “fan service” cheesecake, and, in one memorable scene, a flesh-ripping teddy bear. Except for the teddy bear, these elements have all been used before in anime from Akira to Zone of the Enders, and usually more skillfully. The “Special Edition,” if anyone thinks it’s special, includes a CD of the soundtrack. (Rated 15 and older, but more appropriate for viewers three years older: graphic violence, grotesque imagery, torture, profanity, brief nudity, sexual situations) –Charles Solomon

Product Description

The Desert Attack set includes the Deluxe Class version of Scorponok and a trio of desert camouflage soldiers. Scorponok features both a scorpion mode and a rudimentary bipedal robot mode. The drone-like Scorponok is imbued with animal-level intelligence; his attack is guided by instinct and unrelenting savagery. Having been dispatched by his symbiotic partner, Blackout, Scorponok pursues the soldiers into the desert, burrowing beneath the sand and then lunging upward like a gigantic trapdoor spider. The soldiers are moderately disconcerted by the general ineffectiveness of the majority of their weaponry. Ultimately, however, they manage to wound Scorponok and are able to outdistance themselves from him.

The Dragon Ball features Sleeping Princess in Devil’s Castle (Majinjou no Nemuri Hime, 1987), Mystical Adventure (Maka Fushigi Daiboken, 1988), and The Path to Power (Saikyou e no Michi, 1996), also known as “The Way to Become the Strongest,” were follow-ups to Curse of the Blood Rubies in 1986. When Devil’s Castle opens, Goku is a just a boy. He meets an equally young Krillin, who unfortunately looks like a character from South Park. Both of them want to train with Master Roshi, who insists he can only afford to support one student. Roshi sends them to capture the Sleeping Princess from the castle of vampire-demon Count Lucifer, a mission that pits the two boys against each other. Their adventure doesn’t quite unfold the way it was supposed to, as young heroes run into Bulma, Oolong, Yamcha, and Pwar. In Mystical Adventure, young Goku and Krillin have just completed their training with Master Roshi. The old lecher decides to test his student’s skills at a prestigious martial-arts tournament held by the Emperor Chaozu. The Emperor’s lieutenant, Master Shen, has gathered six of the Dragon Balls to use in his plot to usurp throne. However, Bulma, Oolong and company are also after the Dragon Balls so Bulma can once again wish for a boyfriend.

The Path to Power re-introduces the regular cast: Bulma, the first girl Goku has ever seen, recruits him to help her find the Dragon Balls. With some help from their usual allies, they battle the Red Ribbon Army at the Muscle Tower. Goku makes a new friend: the misprogrammed android, Eighter. Like Mystical Adventure, Path to Power consists of recut footage from the TV series. In all three films, the stories are just set-ups for the familiar mixture of martial-arts mayhem and slapstick comedy. Goku beats his enemies to a pulp after hard battles; Bulma fusses; Master Roshi leers at every female who crosses his path: All ends happily, with Goku victorious. In short, the films provide exactly what Dragon Ball fans love and expect. (Rated TV PG: violence, ethnic stereotypes, nudity, risque humor, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon
