As the first season of Full Metal Panic nears its conclusion, the episodes shift dramatically in tone. The filmmakers pause for a flashback as Sergeant-Major Mao explains to Kaname and Commander Tess how she first met Sousuke and Kurz. Later, Tess warns Kaname that their abilities as Whispereds enable them to form a powerful but potentially dangerous telepathic link. Director Koichi Chigira unleashes a powerful mecha assault, whose violent action packs even more punch after the prolonged respite. Although he’s still traumatized by the loss of his fellow agents in Helmajistan, Sousuke has to lead the attack on Gauron’s new super-mecha, Venom. Turncoats among the Mithril personnel aboard the submarine De Danaan free Gauron, who seizes control of the powerful vessel. Episode 21 ends in a classic cliffhanger as the final, deadly confrontation takes shape. (Rated 15 and older: violence, risque humor, nudity, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon
