According to a revelation, Pacifica, the heroine of the broadcast series Scrapped Princess (2003), will cause the end of the world on her 16th birthday. What exactly that prophecy means isn’t clear, and the narrative falters amid a welter of characters, who multiply like coat hangers in a closet. Shannon, Pacifica’s older brother-protector, meets a mysterious girl-spirit named Zefiris who announces that he is her master. She gives him the magical powers needed to defeat Galil, one of a cadre of powerful beings known as Peace Makers, who are bent on killing Pacifica before she turns 16. A secondary plot involving a sinister baroness, her adopted son/agent, a corrupt cardinal, and the god Mauser only adds to the confusion. The filmmakers are so busy introducing and discarding characters, they seem to have lost track of the story. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity) –Charles Solomon

The broadcast series Scrapped Princess (2003) gives new meaning to the term “anti-hero.” Pacifica Cassul was born under a baleful star: according to the prophecy she’s the poison that will cause the end of the world on her 16th birthday. As the fatal day approaches, she’s on the lam with her older brother and sister, Shannon and Raquel. They’re charged with protecting her from worshippers of the god Mauser, who believe in the prophecy. Pacifica isn’t the most likable character: she fusses and whines and sticks her siblings with all the work. The filmmakers try to balance her petulance with mawkish scenes of doubt and self-pity. The villains multiply in Ichiro Sakaki’s story until it’s not clear just who’s out to get Pacifica. Despite its shortcomings, Scrapped Princess scored a big hit in Japan and may well prove popular in America. (Rated 13 and older: violence, brief nudity) –Charles Solomon

A desert may seem like an unlikely place for pirates, but Luffy and his Straw Hat crew fight for Princess Vivi in the eighth One Piece movie, subtitled “The Desert Princess and the Pirates: Adventures in Alabasta.” Crocodile and his Baroque Works gang foment a civil war in Alabasta, so they can control the country after most of its warriors have been killed. Crocodile also hopes to gain control of the Pluton, an ultimate weapon that may or may not exist. But Luffy and the Straw Hats charge to Vivi’s rescue. Having eaten the Suna Suna or Sand Fruit, Crocodile can turn any part of his body into sand–a trick that may remind viewers of Gaara in Naruto. The climactic battle between the two pirate leaders pits Crocodile’s sand transformations against Luffy’s Gum Gum limbs and wits. Despite its title, One Piece: Movie 8 consists of recut footage from the “Alabasta” story arc of the TV series with some bits of additional animation. The repurposed footage doesn’t always fit together: the film opens in the middle of an adventure and some important story elements get lost in the shuffle, including how Luffy is saved from the poisoned wound Crocodile inflicts. These inconsistencies probably won’t bother One Piece fans. (Rated PG-13: violence, risque humor, tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

The 32-year-old clergyman August returns home from years of missionary work after hearing about the death of his sister Christina, who after going from greatness to the gutter as the famous porn star The Princess – has finally died of drug abuse.
