In the broadcast series Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok (2003), the Norse god of fire has been cast out of the realm of the gods, and imprisoned in the body of an adolescent boy. Seventeen-year-old aspiring detective Mayura stumbles onto the detective agency Loki runs with his assistant Yamino and decides to work with them. Although she often fails to realize it, Mayura finds more mysteries than she bargained for. Loki fights ghosts and spirits, and his sworn enemy, the god Heimdall (also disguised as an adolescent). Transfer student/fast-food worker Narugami is actually Thor, the god of thunder; his hammer has been transformed into a bokken, a wooden practice sword. When the filmmakers get around to explaining why Loki has been exiled to Earth and made to wear a Little Lord Fauntleroy suit, Mythical Detective Loki may gel. Too often, it feels like a generic psychic anime series restaged by the cast of Case Closed. (Rated TV PG, suitable for ages 10 and older: minor violence) –Charles Solomon
