Case Closed: Season Four

Amazon.com

Varying the length of the mysteries from one to four episodes in the long-running (more than 500 episodes) Case Closed helps to keep the series fresh during the fourth season by allowing the filmmakers to introduce more complex plots and multiple characters. But the overall feel is uneven: While many of the adventures are exciting and innovative, others don’t pay off satisfactorily. The way the murder was committed in Episode #93 “Deadly Art” baffles even Conan: Who expects a hi-tech weapon at a flower show? When Richard breaks his leg in Episode #94 “Hospital Homicide” Conan has to handle a gang of bankrobbers-turned-kidnappers completely on his own. The oddest adventure of the season is the four-part “Jimmy Kudo Revealed.” Rachel finally realizes that Conan has to be Jimmy: He knows more than any 8- year-old possibly could, but he displays the same gaps in his knowledge as Jimmy. A childhood photo confirms her suspicions: Conan looks exactly like Jimmy (except for the glasses, which he doesn’t really need). Conan has his back against the wall when he’s saved by the convenient appearance of his actress mother and crime novelist father. Although the quarrelsome pair helps solve an Agatha Christie-style mystery, they’re weak, unsatisfying characters. At the end of the story, Rachel’s suspicions about Conan just disappear–they’re not resolved, but they’re never mentioned again. The two most intriguing characters from Season #3 make only brief appearances: Harley Hartwell, the teen detective who recognized Jimmy’s deductive powers in Conan, and Conan’s nemesis, the magician/cat burglar Phantom Thief 1412 a.k.a. the Phantom Thief Kid. (Rated TV PG: violence, violence against women, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Afro Samurai: Season One - Director’s Cut [Blu-ray]

Afro Samurai: Season One - Director's Cut [Blu-ray]

Amazon.com

The violent five-part adventure Afro Samurai marks both the increasing confluence of American and Japanese pop culture and the shift in Japanese depictions of African-Americans. The popularity of hip-hop in Japan has led to more positive images of blacks, including Takashi Okazaki’s original manga. The “Director’s Cut” contains an additional 15 minutes of footage, and is even gorier than the broadcast version on Spike TV. As a boy, Afro Samurai saw his father beheaded by the maniacal Justice. The murderer sought an ancient headband that marks the wearer as the #1 warrior in the world. As an adult, Afro seeks only revenge, cutting down anyone who blocks his path to Justice. Afro Samurai depicts a oddly anachronistic world that infuses cell phones, cigarette lighters, and cyber technology into traditional Japanese culture. The elongated character designs recall Peter Chung’s Aeon Flux, and much of the series is rendered in moody grays, accented by gobbets of scarlet blood. Afro is such a taciturn figure, most of the dialogue goes to his motor-mouth comrade Ninja Ninja. This big budget production features an eclectic score by Wu-Tang Clan co-founder RZA and an A-list vocal cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson and Ron Perlman. But for all its elaborate production values and over-the-top fights, Afro Samurai suffers from a weakness at its core: Afro is so monosyllabic and cold-blooded, he’s not very interesting. His inevitable duel-to-the-death with Justice lacks the emotional punch of Spike’s face-off against Vicious in Cowboy Bebop or Kenshin’s one-on-one with Shishio in Rurouni Kenshin. This extremely violent series is not for the faint of stomach. (Rated TV MA, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, profanity, sexual activity, grotesque imagery, nudity, risque humor, alcohol and tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Ranma 1/2 TV Anime: Season 7 DVD Box Set

    Amazon.com

At the end of its seventh season, the Ranma?1/2 broadcast series concluded with its 161st episode. Although the filmmakers’ imaginations were clearly flagging at times, this final collection offers very funny and oddly touching moments. The gentler side of the characters emerges in “Run Away with Me,” as an old man revisits his lost youth with girl-type Ranma. “Meet You in the Milky Way” plays off the Asian sky myth of the Weaver Princess and the Cowherd. Princess Ori and Kengyu the herder visit Earth as martial artists, although the story may be a dream of Akane’s. In “Mushroom Temple,” Ranma and Akane inadvertently eat “love mushrooms”–and decide to marry. The perpetually quarreling duo addressing each other as “pretty baby” and “honey” may set a new standard for improbable humor, although Kuno, Ryoga, and Mousse turn their love feast into a free-for-all. More typical are the slapstick incidents: ghost cat Mao Mo Lin busts up a seaside beauty pageant and falls for Tsubasa, not recognizing his true gender. Nabiki and Sasuke sell scandalous photographs of “the pigtailed girl” to Kuno. Ryoga discovers the “Lion Roar Blast” technique, which grows more powerful as the practitioner grows more depressed, forcing him and Ranma to stage a misery contest. Rumiko Takahashi’s Ranma 1/2 ranks among the undisputed classics of anime, and few animated series can match the chaotic hilarity of its more inspired moments. (Rated 13 and older: brief nudity, risque humor, slapstick violence) –Charles Solomon

Ouran High School Host Club: Season One, Part Two

    Amazon.com

The second half of the reverse-harem comedy Ouran High School Host Club explores the characters’ pasts, offering insights into their odd personalities. Identical twins Hikaru and Kaoru never paid any attention to anyone else until Club president Tamaki recruited them; Kyoya, the neglected youngest son of a stern father, found his first friend when his parents insisted he hang out with Tamaki to help cement corporate relations. “Lolita boy” Mitsukuni followed his family tradition as a martial-arts champion. Despite their good looks, social prominence, and wealth, the boys led lonely lives. Tamaki’s Host Club has given them the one thing they lacked: a sense of belonging. Haruhi, the girl pretending to be a boy in the group, agrees. The warmth of that realization doesn’t prevent the Hosts from squabbling and behaving as insanely as they did in the first episodes, but it gives the series a balance that keeps it from feeling too silly. Although Ouran High School Host Club only ran for a single season, its popularity on both sides of the Pacific may well lead to sequels. The set includes a small 2009 print calendar of the Host Club members. (Rated TV 14: risque humor, including allusions to homosexuality and lesbianism) –Charles Solomon
