Dragon Ball Z – Season Two (Namek and Captain Ginyu Sagas) (1996)
Amazon.com
The second season of the wildly popular Dragon Ball Z comprises the “Namek” and “Captain Ginyu” sagas. Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma travel to the planet Namek to find an even more powerful set of Dragon Balls that can restore the lives of Tenshinhan, Yamucha, Chaozu and Piccolo, who were killed by Vegeta during the first season. (Their souls continue to train with King Kai in the Other World.) All is not well on Namek: the arch-villain Frieza, who looks and sounds a bit like Truman Capote, also desires the Dragon Balls. If he uses them to obtain eternal life, he’ll rule the universe forever. With a cadre of lieutenants that includes Vegeta, he slaughters the Namekians to gain the supernatural orbs. After his injuries have been healed by a magic senzu bean, Goku heads to Namek. En route, he trains at 100 gravities, raising his powers enormously. Vegeta believes Goku may be the legendary Super Saiyan that appears once a millennium–except he lacks the requisite love of battle. This version of Goku is less aggressive, and he uncharacteristically uses his brain (never his greatest asset) to defeat Ginyu, Frieza’s second-in-command. Unlike Season 1–Vegeta Saga, Season 2ends on a cliff-hanger. Skeptics may find Goku’s adventures needlessly protracted, over the top, and even silly. But for millions of boys, they provide the special blend of comradeship, martial arts training, and take-no-prisoners battles they love. The newly remastered edition includes the original Japanese dialogue for the first time. (Rated TV PG. suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, minor risque humor, brief nudity, tobacco and alcohol use) –Charles Solomon

Farscape – The Best of Season One (1999)
Amazon.com
Farscape: The Best of Season One collects six episodes selected by series creator and executive producer Rockne S. O’Bannon. “Premiere” introduces American astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder), who is flung into an interstellar prison escape on the other side of the universe and must ally himself with the colorful convicts: D’Argo, a hulking warrior with a fleshy Rastafarian mane; Zhaan, a blue-skinned priest of indeterminate age; fugitive Peacekeeper Aeryn; Rygel, a greedy and troll-like exiled king; and Pilot, the giant insect-like nerve center of their living ship, Moya. The title character of “DNA Mad Scientist” offers them a way home in exchange for a sample of their DNA… and one of Pilot’s arms. In “A Human Reaction,” Crichton finally gets back to Earth, but with unfortunate results for the rest of Moya’s crew. Leading toward the climax of the show’s first season, “Nerve” and “The Hidden Memory” make for a bold two-parter in which Crichton is reunited with his Peacekeeper Tech girlfriend, Gilina, and emotions are strained as he infiltrates a Peacekeeper base to find a cure for Aeryn’s wound. But the story’s most important function is to introduce the dreaded Scorpius, who uses his Aurora Chair torture device to extract what he mistakenly believes is vital knowledge from Crichton. Finally, in “Family Ties,” the season ends on a tense cliffhanger as Rygel plots with Scorpius, Crais intervenes unexpectedly, Moya’s child turns out to be something of a handful, and Crichton and D’Argo must take a desperate gamble.

Inuyasha – Season 4 Box Set (2002)
Amazon.com
As Rumiko Takahashi’s “Feudal Fairy Tale” continues, the main storyline about recapturing the fragments of the Shikkon Jewel recedes and shorter adventures come to the fore. At the end of season 3, Inu-Yasha destroyed the magical barrier protecting his enemy Naraku: the evil demon fled, leaving no trail. Naraku’s absence allows dozens of minor demons to emerge from hiding and cause problems that Kagome, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Inu-Yasha must undo. An eccentric exorcist tangles with Miroku and the imprisoned spirit of a lovely princess; the demon Orchidayu creates fake Shikkon Jewels in an effort to strengthen his servants. Some of the adventures take a comic turn. When Kagome’s younger brother develops his first crush on a classmate, he asks Inu-Yasha’s advice about how to approach the girl. (Asking the terminally insensitive Inu-Yasha for romantic advice is about as sensible as asking a vegetarian how to cook a pot roast.) A shape-shifting raccoon spirit impersonates Miroku so accurately, he gets the lecherous monk in trouble with the women of two villages. By this point, the characters in Inu-Yasha have become so familiar, their antics feel entertaining even when they don’t really advance the plot. Although this package is labelled Fourth Season Box Set, the opening animation and song change after episode 95, suggesting there’s some overlap. The Deluxe Edition (ASIN# ) includes a model of Miroku’s prayer beads (a Buddhist rosary) in aqua plastic. (Rated Teen: suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) –Charles Solomon

Ranma 1/2 – Outta Control – The Complete Fourth Season Boxed Set (2002)
Amazon.com
The fourth broadcast season of this popular transgender comedy feels less inspired than the third (collected in the Hard Battle set). Ranma’s duel with a feline specter in “My Fiance, the Cat” plays like a retread of “You Really Do Hate Cats!” from the second season. In episode 17 Kasumi encounters a childhood friend after many years, but the reunion doesn’t really go anywhere. Although series creator Rumiko Takahashi says the three-part “Ranma Gets Weak” story line is a personal favorite, it’s not much fun. A trick of Happosai’s deprives Ranma of his strength, so everyone pounds him into mochi. Ranma is funny when he’s undone despite his strength, not when he’s just a punching bag. Another problem is that Richard Ian Cox, who’s taken over the voice of boy-type Ranma, sounds less like a petulant teenager than Sarah Strange did.
But the better moments in this collection are still great fun. In episodes 15 and 16, a Martial Arts Calligraphy master leaves Ryoga with a pattern on his stomach that looks like Betty Boop’s face. This story reveals the grudging affection Ranma and Ryoga share, despite their ongoing rivalry. (Only the perpetually lost Ryoga could dramatically bid everyone farewell–then set off on a loop trail.) Happosai’s incurable fetish for girls’ underwear severs the student-teacher bond in episode 10 and blights the old lecher’s nascent romance with a pretty preschool teacher in episode 13. (Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and older: slapstick violence, nudity, mildly risque humor) –Charles Solomon
