FLCL – Ultimate Edition DVD Collection (2006)

FLCL - Ultimate Edition DVD Collection

Amazon.com

An outrageous mixture of science-fiction action, mecha misadventures, sinister coporate plots, and broad slapstick comedy, FLCL (“Fooly Cooly”) has been a fan favorite since the six-part OAV debuted in 2000. The four-disc Ultimate Edition includes all the episodes, an additional disc with music, a rock video, and poster art, plus a booklet, a rubber bracelet, and a postcard to send in for a free T-shirt.

Things have been going badly for sixth-grader Naota since his older brother Tasuku left to play pro baseball in America. At the opening of the series, he complains, “Nothing amazing happens here. Only the ordinary.” Then Haruko, a girl from outer space, charges in on her motor scooter and clobbers him with an electric guitar. Her arrival upsets Tasuku’s old girlfriend Mamimi, who regards bugging Naota as her prerogative. The fragmentary plot quickly dissolves into a string of chaotic events involving the main characters, Naota’s lecherous father and grandfather, and various mecha (which grow from horns on Naota’s head). Looming over the town is the mysterious Medical Mechanica factory, which looks like a giant iron. The freewheeling nuttiness of FLCL helped set the pattern for Dokkoida?!, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and other reflexive comedies. The episodes feature references to everything from Doraemon and Gundam to South Park. The bold graphic style of the animation shifts radically from scene to scene, including two sequences done as manga pages. The extras include commentaries, outtakes, and storyboard comparisons. FLCL is a bizarre series that will delight otaku who value comedy and action over coherency. (Unrated, suitable for ages 14 and older: violence, risque humor, brief nudity. tobacco use) –Charles Solomon

Marmalade Boy Ultimate Scrapbook – Volume 1 (Episodes 1-19)

Marmalade Boy Ultimate Scrapbook - Volume 1 (Episodes 1-19)

Amazon.com

The plot of the popular teen comedy Marmalade Boy consists of a series of interlocking romantic polygons that suggest a cross between The Brady Bunch and As the World Turns. Toryo High School junior Miki Koshikawa is appalled when her parents announce that they and their friends the Matsuras have decided to divorce, switch partners, remarry, and live together. This marital mix-and-match scheme forces Miki into contact with the Matsuras’ handsome son Yuu. His mischievous sense of humor plays against what is basically a warm, gentle nature, leading Miki to compare him to the bittersweet taste of orange marmalade.

The budding romance between Miki and Yuu upsets Ginta, whom Miki nurtured a crush on two years earlier. Arimi, Yuu’s conniving former girlfriend, suggests she and Ginta pretend to date to make Miki jealous. Their sham romance infuriates Ginta’s obnoxious cousin Tsutomu, who adores Arimi and hates Yuu. Tsutomu provides welcome comic relief, as he’s always losing bets that require him to shave his head. Meanwhile, Meiko, Miki’s best friend, dodges the attentions of student body president Satoshi to pursue a star-crossed romance with one of her teachers.

It’s not clear just what Yuu and Ginta see in fussy, indecisive Miki. The relationships in Marmalade Boy go through more twists and turns than an L.A. freeway, but the series ran for 76 episodes–three times as long as Evangelion, which also debuted in 1995–and has remained popular ever since. (Rated 13 and older: minor cartoon violence, minor profanity, alcohol use) –Charles Solomon

Ninja Scroll: The Series – Ultimate Collection (2003)

Ninja Scroll: The Series - Ultimate Collection

Amazon.com

Ten years after his popular feature Ninja Scroll (1993), Yoshiaki Kawajiri returned to the adventures of super-ninja Jubei Kibagami in a broadcast series. A wanderer who can cleave enemies in two with a single sword-stroke, Jubei gets drawn into a ghoulish war while trying to get a peaceful night’s sleep. The Hiruko and Kimon ninja clans are fighting over the mysterious Dragon Stone, which confers extraordinary wealth and power. It’s somehow linked to Shigure, a woman whom the ninjas call the Light Maiden. With some faltering help from thief Tsubute and Dakuan, an aged but powerful monk, Jubei sets out to deliver the magical Stone to Shigure. What follows is a repetitious gore-fest: Jubei splits, beheads, and skewers an endless array of bizarre-looking demons. At one point, a ship literally floats away on a sea of blood. Despite some simple computer animated effects, Ninja Scroll looks more like a series from the mid-’80s than 2003. The designs of the characters, endless duels, and meandering storyline recall Fist of the North Star and other early, blood-soaked epics.

The four-disc Ultimate Collection comes loaded with special features and extras, including interviews with the composers, directors, English language director, and principal English voice actors. There are storyboard/animation comparisons, still art galleries, a trivia game, and Weblinks–everything but character arcs and a coherent plot. (Unrated, suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, nudity, sexual situations, including suggested rape and lesbianism) –Charles Solomon

The Wanderers – El Hazard TV Series – The Ultimate Weapon (Vol. 2)

The Wanderers - El Hazard TV Series - The Ultimate Weapon (Vol. 2)

Amazon.com

Stranded on the alternate world of El Hazard, Makoto, Fujisawa, and Nanami follow Princess Rune and Alielle into situations that allow Rune and Makoto moments of romantic longing–to Nanami’s annoyance. But their mini-adventures don’t really go anywhere: in episode 10, Makoto rescues the shape-shifting cat Ura from a vulpine monster–whose presence is never explained or resolved. The story grows darker when a legendary floating castle appears over Roshtaria. Makoto inadvertently awakens the demon Ifurita, but she’s kidnapped by Jinnai and his Bugrom minions. The legends describe Ifurita as the Ultimate Weapon, but she’s naive to the point of sappiness, which hinders Jinnai’s plans to use her to conquer El Hazard. Director Katsuhito Akiyama can’t find a satisfactory balance between the comedy and the adventure, and the story lurches between the two with little sense of a sustained narrative. Rated 13 Up: risque humor, violence, alcohol use.–Charles Solomon
