Bleach, Volume 6: The Entry (Episodes 21-24)

Amazon.com

The fantasy-adventure Bleach enters a new phase as Ichigo, Chad, Ohime, Ishida, and Master Yoruichi the talking cat, pass through the interdimensional portal linking Earth to the world of the Soul Society. Although the Soul Reapers perform merciful acts, their realm is hierarchical and segregated: lost souls are consigned to rundown buildings in Rukon (”Drifting Spirit Town”), while the members of the Soul Society dwell within a guarded preserve. Ichigo, who possesses enormous spiritual power but little discipline, wants to fight everyone who crosses his path. Fortunately, the cooler and wiser Yoruichi prevails. He’s well known in Rukon, and obtains help from hot-tempered pyrotechnician Kukaku. Her brother Ganju and Ichigo immediately establish a feuding friendship reminiscent of Kazuma and Ryuho in S-cry-Ed. Director Noriyuki Abe plays their comic battles against the threat to Rukia’s life and the icy menace of Captain Gin Ichimaru. (Rated Teen, suitable for ages 13 and older: violence, grotesque imagery) –Charles Solomon

Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 4 (Special Edition)

Amazon.com

The second season of Naruto continues as the next phase of the Chunin exams begins: individual combat among the surviving candidates. Kakashi-sensei seals the curse mark Orochimaru set on Sasuke’s neck, but its effect on the talented young ninja remains uncertain. Naruto beats his opponent using decidedly unconventional means: only everyone’s favorite knucklehead could turn an attack of flatulence into a jutsu. As the matches progress, the focus shifts from Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to the secondary characters Hinata and Rock Lee. The offspring of a great ninja clan, Hinata seems too timid to live up to the family tradition of violence, but she fights valiantly against her cousin Neiji. Rock Lee has no talent for the magical jutsu the other students employ, so he’s trained himself mercilessly in physical techniques. He’s pitted against Gara, the icy trainee who fights with clouds of enchanted sand. Lee and Hinata overtax their resources but demonstrate true ninja spirit–and win the respect of Naruto and Sakura. The struggles of the secondary characters add some emotional depth to the inevitably repetitious fight scenes. The season ends on multiple cliffhangers, with Lee and Sasuke in the hospital and Naruto beginning a grueling training regimen with a new sensei to prepare for the final Chunin combat. The Special Limited Edition comes with a Mist Village headband and wrist sweatband, plus a Mist Village bag to carry them in. (Rated T+ Older Teen; suitable for ages 12 and older: violence, toilet humor) –Charles Solomon

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Volume 01 (Special Edition)

Amazon.com

The broadcast series based on Mamoru Oshii’s influential film Ghost in the Shell (1995) has been eagerly awaited on both sides of the Pacific. Although its production values are lower, and director Kenji Kamiyama never equals Oshii’s inspired camerawork, Stand Alone Complex does an impressive job of re-creating the setting and characters. Major Motoko Kusanagi moves through a deadly city of mecha, cyborgs, humans, and human-prosthetic hybrids. (The series takes place in a parallel world, where Kusanagi never encountered the Puppet Master.) With the help of Batou, Togusa, and other officers from Public Security Section 9, she battles terrorists, hackers, and rogue machinery. An insect-like tank with a grating, babyish voice is a dubious addition to the cast, but fans of both Oshii’s film and Shirow Masamune’s original manga will find the program delivers plenty of hard-hitting action. (Rated 13 and older: considerable violence, grotesque imagery, nudity, alcohol use) –Charles Solomon
